YAP Dublin South City Profile Information and Outcomes Summary to end of 2015

  • 11/06/2015

2014 has been a very good year for YAP Ireland with Young People and Families receiving a high quality service leading to very positive outcomes for them and their communities. Of course, without the hard work and commitment of the staff of YAP Ireland this would not be possible and they have maintained that commitment to the Young People and Families despite some major changes in the structure of the organisation and budget constraints – so thanks to all of you.

We have had a number of exciting developments this year with the Launch of the NUI Maynooth Evidence Informed Research into the impact of YAP Ireland that shows the positive impact the programme has on the wellbeing of Young People and Families; Building relationships with referrers in Disability Services and providing services to Young People with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome; Working with US Colleagues to introduce YAP to Sweden; The Youth CEO Group and the Youth Forum increasing their influence in YAP and wider society; The launch of YAP as an assessor for the Investing in Children Award and agreeing a pilot service for Young People in the Children Detention Schools with the Irish Youth Justice Service which will be in place in 2015.

A very special thank you to Katie, Teaghen, Georgina and Chelsey for being such brilliant Youth CEO’s – your contribution made a huge difference to YAP Ireland and to me. I look forward to working with Young People, Families, staff, referrers, partners and the Board to ensure that YAP Ireland continues to put Young People at the centre of everything that we do.

The Youth Advocates Programmes (YAP) Ireland Limerick Mural project brought together 7 young people involved in YAP – some had met each other before on a participation outing and others had never met before. The theme behind the project was to explore how the young people felt about YAP and what they get out of it i.e. "What YAP means to me".

Throughout the project the aims were to introduce and encourage the participants to:

    1. use games and activities to explore their feelings and opinions of YAP and its importance in their lives.
    2. to share their ideas and stories in a safe environment.
    3. be creative through a design process.
    4. participate in a collaborative manner in the creation of the mural.
    5. keep a visual diary and add their own artwork and stories.
    6. discuss the content and progress of the session/project.

When the Mural was completed the young people expressed how they felt about the project and how they felt that interaction like this with other YAP participants was really valuable.

Debbie - “I enjoyed meeting new people and I feel that we really bonded throughout the few weeks that we spent there. It was fun and I looked forward going in there every Monday.”
Rhys - “I liked putting graffiti on the wall and messing about!”
Audrice- “I loved getting covered in paint and flicking it everywhere!”
Brendan – “I liked painting and meeting new friends!”

The group as a whole gained a lot out of this project. The young people said that the project changed what they thought of YAP and it made them realise what they get out of YAP.

Mural Participants: Audrice, Brendan, Rhys, Darren, Shannon, Joshua and Debbie.

The theme of YAP Ireland’s Annual Report for 2013 is ‘partnership’ which is fundamental to the success of the YAP Ireland model.  YAP Ireland works in partnership with the Child and Family Agency in delivering services to young people and families and with other services such as Child and Adolescent Mental Health, schools and community and voluntary organisations; and most importantly, with the young people and families referred to the service.

2013 was a busy year for YAP Ireland with NUI Maynooth completing their longitudinal evidence informed research into the impact of the YAP Programme on outcomes for young people and families. The research found that the YAP programme achieves positive outcomes across a range of measures.  YAP Ireland also undertook many partnerships with young people in 2013 and was successful in its application to become a member of Investing in Children evidencing “Dialogue leading to Change”. The Youth CEO group formed this year following a recommendation from the Youth Forum and the group have continued to develop the role of the Youth CEO for YAP Ireland.

Given the theme of the Annual Report is Partnership, we would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to our partners in the Child and Family Agency, young people, families, carers, staff, and members of the Board, those partners who attended YAP events, completed the YAP Partner Survey and who continue to champion the YAP Model within referral agencies to ensure that as many young people as possible can access services like YAP. YAP Ireland are launching their Annual Report for 2013 regionally this year with local events taking place in Limerick, Cork, Galway, Cavan, Dublin and Meath.

YAP Ireland carried out a Partner Opinion Survey as part of our Annual Report 2013 theme ‘partnership’. The survey was completed online by partners of YAP Ireland, primarily referrers to the YAP Ireland service.

The survey consisted of 18 questions which were broken down into 3 key areas. The areas covered were: Knowledge of Service; Quality of Service and Evaluation of Service. The results of our first online partner survey were very positive and we thank all those who took the time to complete the survey. For a copy of the full report please click here.
