    • We had a busy year in Co. Louth in both our parent and young people’s groups.  An overriding topic with both parents and young people alike was MONEY...and a lot of talk around the summer holidays and what would families do without money for holidays or activities. So we came up with a four week summer programme for the young people and families. Everyone was happy...our four week summer programme consisted of Cookery, Art, Dance and Keep Fit and we had morning sessions for our younger age group with our teens coming in the afternoons.

One young person from Louth (17 years) who took part in all of the activities said she really enjoyed the dance the best, this was mainly hip hop. This was led by Kirsty from Ardee along with the help of our own advocate dancer, Majella Clarke. She also felt the cookery classes by Sonia Micallef of D'Vine were great, and she learnt how to cook meals from scratch.

The Art Classes by our own Advocate Cliodhna Cunningham were a great success and young people also learnt photography skills, sketching, and mosaic and canvas work. The keep fit classes became a games session. Christmas came and the parents enjoyed learning how to cook up some of that leftover turkey, turning it into a pie as demonstrated by Gillian from Thyme to Cook who will be back with us in 2013 to finish off our cooking on a budget sessions.

    • Youth Media and the Irish Presidency

European Movement Ireland have launched a new 32-county initiative to recruit 25 young communicators to report on Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.  Applications are now open to take part in Youth Media and the Irish Presidency (YMIP) and to cover the Irish Presidency from January to June 2013.  YMIP is open to 18 to 25 year olds from any part of the island of Ireland, who are passionate about communicating in any format and have a desire to bring a strong youth perspective to the coverage of Ireland’s Presidency.

No prior journalism experience is necessary to participate in YMIP.  EM Ireland are looking for interested and enthusiastic communicators.  Whether you write, blog, photograph or video, we want to hear from you and see how you could apply your skills to enhance the Presidency coverage.

YMIP participants will be given access to official Presidency events – approximately one a month per participant – and tasked with reporting on these in any medium they wish.  Your reports will then be published on the EM Ireland website, with the opportunity of also appearing on SpunOut, and will be promoted by the EM Ireland Communications teams via social media and directly to regional and national media.

The first task for all 25 participants will be to cover the launch of the European Year of Citizens 2013 which is taking place in Dublin City Hall on 10 January.   The year will be launched by the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, along with the Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD, and the Tánaiste, Eamon Gilmore TD.  This event will then be followed by a Citizens’ Dialogue, at which Vice-President of the European Commission, Viviane Reding, and Minister of State for European Affairs, Lucinda Creighton TD, will engage in a frank and open exchange of opinions with 200 citizen guests on the current economic crisis, the rights of European citizens and the future of the EU.  Our 25 citizen journalists will all be there covering these two events.

In advance of this, and to prepare you for your six-month stint as a citizen journalist, EM Ireland have organised a two-day training period in Dublin for our 25 citizen journalists in January.   This will provide you with the chance to get to know the rest of the YMIP participants, and to learn from practitioners from all fields of journalism: good old-fashioned newspaper contributors, bloggers, online communicators and television presenters.  You will also be given a brief crash course in the Presidency of the Council of the EU: what it involves and what it means for Ireland and for Irish citizens.

Over the course of the six months of the Presidency and the YMIP Programme, you will liaise with Neale and Ruth in the EM Ireland team, who will task you with events to cover, edit your work and give you feedback on your coverage. There will also be a follow-up session in Dublin during the Programme to see how everyone is getting on, to address any issues that have arisen, and to give you the chance to learn more about journalism and communication and to further improve your skills and output.   The Programme will be rounded off with the official launch of the YMIP Report in late June 2013.

Participation in the YMIP Programme requires significant time and energy commitments from its participants, particularly from those who live outside Dublin, but it is a fantastic opportunity for Ireland’s young people to get involved with the Irish Presidency.  We want to empower young people North and South of the border to make your voices heard in this year celebrating active citizenship and engagement.

      How To Get Involved

If what we’ve described here sounds like something you might be interested in, download the application form from the YMIP webpage, fill it out and return it to EM Ireland by Wednesday 19 December

Send your applications by post to Ruth McCourt, European Movement Ireland, 6 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 or by email to presidency@europeanmovement.ie.

    • It's About You

Make sure YOUR VOICE is heard in the Children’s Referendum campaign!

On November 10th, Ireland will vote on strengthening the rights of children in the Constitution. Decisions about the lives of children will be made by adult voters but what are your views on this historic Referendum?

All over Ireland a discussion is taking place on children’s rights; UNICEF Ireland wants to publicise the voices of children and young people in this debate and display your valuable opinions and participation.

       Its About YOU

Let’s not simply promote children’s rights, demonstrate them!

This referendum will provide a mechanism for children to be heard in matters which affect them but let's not wait until polling day to be heard- the opportunity to be both seen AND heard starts here!

    • The Government is holding the Children’s Referendum on Saturday 10th of November 2012. It is hugely important that young people are supported to use their vote and to be heard. This is a historic opportunity to Vote Yes for Children and to make a real difference.

The focus of NYCI’s referendum  campaign is to encourage young people to register to vote and to mobilise voter turnout.  The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Ms Frances Fitzgerald recently made a “very special plea” to young people and students to vote. “It’s an opportunity for people to bring their children to the polling booth and let them see democracy in action. We’re holding this referendum on a Saturday to enable more young people make their vote count” She went on to say ‘ a high turnout will send a very strong message about the importance of children in Irish Society’.

NYCI launched it’s voter registration campaign today.

Please get involved and support young people to vote by sending this APP to every young person aged 18years+ in your organisation/service today.

Deadline for registration is next Tuesday (Oct 23rd) so it is essential that young people are registered in time.

The HTML5 app ‘Your Voice, Your Vote’ uses animation and short, sharp messages to guide users through registering to vote, reasons to vote Yes and also encourages them to sign up for reminders about registration and voting dates.

Download link for app: send this link via email or mobile phones, twitter or facebook. http://bit.ly/YES4Children

Many youth services across the country are also hosting registration days with their local community Gardai over the next week ,whereby young people can complete the registration form on site. If you haven’t already planned to do this……you still have time to get organised.

Please see www.nyci.ie for more information on the referendum and on voter registration or contact NYCI campaign team on info@nyci.ie /01 4784122.

    • Youth Advocate Programme Galway launch celebratory art piece to promote YAP Ireland’s 10th Birthday

Youth Advocate Programme (YAP) Galway launched a celebratory art piece to promote YAP Ireland’s 10th Birthday on 24th October in Galway City Library. Six young people on the YAP programme in Galway have created an art piece which symbolises two Advocates supporting and guiding two young people through the YAP programme.  The art piece was showcased during Cultural Night 2012 in City Library, and was formally launched by members of the Connaught Rugby team. The project was completed over a five day period with the support of artist Margaret Nolan who assisted in developing the vision. Margaret Nolan worked with the group during the month of August to create the piece which is six foot by eight foot in size. Paint, fake grass and leaves were used to create silhouettes of young people during their journey with YAP. The art project is just one of many which have been undertaken by young people across the country in YAP Ireland to celebrate the organisation’s 10th birthday and will be showcased as part of a national event taking place on the 8th November in Dublin.

    • YAP Ireland have released a response to the proposed wording for the Children’s Referendum on 10th November.

‘YAP Ireland warmly welcome the proposed wording for the Children’s Referendum and hopes it will reframe the conversation within society about how we view children and young people and support them to have their needs met.  We particularly welcome the ‘principle of the best interests of the child’ as the basis for all decision making regarding children and the special recognition of the importance of children and young people being consulted about decisions that affect them.

YAP Ireland as a strengths based organisation is constantly amazed at the way that young people come up with solutions to difficulties that they face and how well they can work together with other young people and adults to come up with practical, simple solutions.  We hope that the Children’s Referendum will ensure that all Government departments use the best interests of the child principle to benchmark their policies and make sure that they support the right of children and young people to access services as they need them and at the appropriate level of intervention.  We look forward to a positive and invigorating campaign for a YES vote on 10th November.’

The New York Times Magazine recently published an article which extensively features YAP Inc. very positively.  Jeff Fleischer

    • The New York Times Magazine recently published an article which extensively features YAP Inc. very positively.  Jeff FleischerCEO, YAP Inc. has released the following piece of text which introduces the article:

In his striking Sunday NY Times Magazine Article below (August 19, 2012), Paul Tough makes the case for youth and families living in extreme poverty in America, and that too many "truly disadvantaged" kids are being left behind. The article highlights one of YAP's grass roots anti-violence programs, deeply rooted in Chicago's south and west sides where our staff, local experts in the community's assets and needs, work intensively with the City's most marginalized and impoverished youth and families.

The article brings attention to a critical issue- that  many Americans still live in extreme poverty. It also poses a serious question- how can we alleviate the circumstances of people living in extreme poverty and what solutions work? Our Chicago program is one example of how intensive support from community members and investment by local or national government can help kids left behind by most programs, have a chance to capitalize on other opportunities.

What our staff did in the Chicago YAP Program, and what we do in 18 states with over 12,000 families across the country, is simple but essential: we sit down with families and kids in crisis, we engage communities, we ask families- what do you need, how can we help, how can wan work together as equal partners and finally, how can we give back to our communities? With a fully engaged Family Team comprised of YAP community advocates, family members and their supporters, we have been able to achieve phenomenal results for the families we work with. In YAP's Chicago Program discussed in the article, our community-based staff have served over 500 kids, all of whom were predicted to be 20x more likely to be shooters or victims of violence, yet over 94% were kept safe. 85% graduated from high school and of them, nearly 50% are off to college or trade school. In-school suspensions, misconducts and expulsions that traditionally lead to juvenile or criminal justice system involvement are down significantly. Our staff worked to get kids who would otherwise be unemployable into jobs at community businesses, that reflect their interests, with support of a YAP advocate, trained in job coaching.

Our experience shows that as communities, we can do something to help families and youth who live in extreme poverty, who are "truly disadvantaged" and who have demonstrated phenomenal propensity for resilience and respond positively to opportunity. If we can work together and support families in need, we can make a big difference. And we should.

    • YAP Ireland Cork Build a Boat and are taking part in the International Ocean to City Race as part of the Cork Maritime Festival

YAP Cork is currently embarking on a traditional journey of building a Currach as part of the Ocean to City Race and to mark YAP Ireland’s 10th Birthday.

This joint venture will allow young people to build a boat by using traditional methods, skills and materials and learn to row the Currachs on the famous River Lee.

They will be placed in teams of two to represent YAP Ireland in the youth section of this famous race. They will be competing against other youth groups and organisations. The race will take them under the bridges of Cork to the finish line where their parents, families, friends, the public and International Press will be present to cheer on the YAP Teams.

The Core group consists of YAP young people aged between 10 to 17 years - all first time boat builders, Jade O’Connor, Chloe Slattery, Elizabeth O’Driscoll, Wesley Tynan and Gavin Sykes. They are joined by their YAP advocates and staff of Meitheal Mara (Boat Building Project).

The group are about 5 weeks into the process and are now joined by some parents to make sure that it is complete before the Race day.

As you can see from the pictures in the Photo Gallery named Boat Building Project Cork the bones of the Boat are done and the next stage is the skin which we will be painted to make sure that the public can indentify our boat.

Phase one of the boat Build is coming to the end as you can see from the pictures in the Photo Gallery named Boat Building Project Cork Phase 2, the final touches are been made to the first section of the Boat . The next Phase will involve putting on what is called the Skin(Canvass). This will allow the young people to see the actual structure of the boat, then for the tricky part, placing a colourful design on the canvas.  These boats are normally Black in colour .

All the young people and parents, Advocates, School staff and Social Work teams are getting really excited that this boat built by the young people and parents will take its place on the river on the 2nd of June.

As the final piece will involve the painting and design we think that this should be a surprise, but trust me it will be what they say in cork “Decent”.  As the YAP flags will fly the Boat it will be very colourful and special.

We will keep you up to date with the progress and hope to see you in Cork for the Ocean to City Race on 2nd June.

What- Cork Maritime Festival – boat launch and boat race
      When- Thursday 31st May at 2pm & Saturday 2nd June at 12.30pm
Where- Lapp’s Quay, Boardwalk, Cork City

YAP Cork has embarked on a traditional journey of building a Currach as part of the International Ocean to City Race and to mark YAP Ireland’s 10th Birthday. This joint venture has allowed young people to build a boat by using traditional methods, skills and materials and learn how to row a Currach on the famous river Lee.

The boat will be officially launched by Kathleen Lynch TD, Minister for Disability, Equality, Mental Health and Older People on Thursday 31st May at 2pm at Lapp’s Quay, Boardwalk, Cork City and young people, families, staff and supporters are invited to attend.  Refreshments will be provided following the launch.

Please let Mary know if you are able to attend on 01 8689180 or mdoyle@yapireland.ie before Wednesday 30th May.

Two teams of young people will represent YAP Ireland in the youth section of this famous race on Saturday 2nd June. The two teams will be competing against other youth groups and organisations. The race will take them under the bridges of Cork to the finish line at Lapp’s Quay where their parents, families, friends, the public and International Press will be present to cheer on the YAP teams.

The core group consists of YAP young people aged between 10 to 17 years - all first time boat builders. They are joined by the Advocates and staff of Meitheal Mara, Boat Building Project. This journey has allowed the young people with parents and staff to build a Currach by using ancient Irish skills to achieve a top class finish.

The group have started on the last phase of the project by painting a very creative and youthful image on the skin of the boat. The concept of the design has been drawn up by the young people, staff and parents of the project. The image will encapsulate the importance of the river in our city and the strength of our young people’s creativity. This will be the only highly decorative boat on the day, so the public cannot miss us. YAP flags will fly from the boat and it will be very colourful and special. The final boat will be a surprise but pictures of the boat building phase can be found on the YAP Ireland website at: http://www.yapireland.ie

The youth race is set to start at 12.30pm from Blackrock Pier and concludes at Lapp’s Quay in Cork City where street entertainment, face painting, market stalls and musical entertainment will be available as part of the Cork Maritime Festival.

    • YAP Ireland are delighted to announce that  a group of young people from the YAP programme in the Galway region are participating in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day festival in Galway city. The 8 young people who are between the ages of 10 and 18 years will take part in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade supported by YAP staff.

When speaking about the group’s performance, Niamh O’Brien - Deputy Manager in YAP Ireland said that: “the group will use an informal theatrical performance based on an interpretation of the modern day leprechaun. Their piece will use influences stemming from Finvarra – legendary King of the Connaught Fairies and original King of the leprechauns who according to folklore, brings luck and good fortune to the community. Their piece is colourful, artistic and will use fluid movements, while also being energetic .The piece which is young person led, has involved the young people through all stages from start to finish.”

Niamh O’Brien also said that “working on the performance has helped the young people to break down barriers, assisted their confidence building, developed their social skills and creativity, while also helping to achieve a sense of accomplishment for them.” Each of these elements is key to achieving YAP Ireland’s vision which is young people and families belong to confident and connected communities.

Speaking in advance of St. Patrick’s Day events on Saturday, Siobhán O’Dwyer CEO of YAP said “we are delighted the young people involved in YAP have the opportunity to showcase their talents. They have gained in confidence and developed new skills, which through this performance they are now sharing with other young people, their families and the wider community in Galway”.

    • YAP Ireland entered the Better Together Video Competition with the Wheel. Our entry was called Voices - Yap Ireland.

Over the last few weeks charities, community groups and associations up and down the country have been submitting their short inspirational videos to the Better Together Video Competition. The public were then invited to vote on these videos and help spread the word about the work being done in communities across the country every single day. The prize is €3,000 for the best Video in each category and only the top 10 are shortlisted to go forward for the €3,000 prize.

Voting for the Better Together Video Competition has now closed.

Ten videos will be shortlisted in each of the following categories:

      1. Organisation with staff with a turnover greater than €500,000 per year

      2. Organisation with staff with a turnover less than €500,000 per year

      3. Volunteer only organisation.

The winning video in each of the three categories will be awarded €3,000.

The Better Together Video Competition voting system is based on an accumulated stars system. When voting for a particular video, voters chose between 1 and 5 stars. A 5-star rating delivered 5 votes to the video in question and a 1-star rating delivered 1 star, and so on. The number of votes for each video will now be added up to create the shortlist.

The shortlist will be announced on Wednesday, 16 November.

A panel of independent judges will review each shortlisted video and a winner will be selected in each category.

The winners will be announced at the Better Together Awards on 1 December 2011.

Thank you for your support throughout the campaign.

Better Together is a nationwide campaign which aims to build support for hundreds of charities, community groups and associations across the country by encouraging the public to support these good causes and make a difference in their communities. The public are invited to vote on these videos and help spread the word about the work being done in communities across the country every single day.

A group of Young People from Dublin carried out interviews with young people whose lives had been affected by the misuse of drugs and alcohol. They put this together with still photographs and presented this at the event. A group of parents performed a very moving drama, written by themselves, to a spellbound audience. YAP is extremely grateful to all those who attended, participated and helped to make this day a huge success.

    • In 2009 YAP Ireland became a registered charity in its own right. YAP Ireland was officially launched on Thursday October 8th 2009 at a Family Event held in Croke Park in Dublin. The event was preceded by a Tour of Croke Park Museum and was attended by over 120 Young People and their families from all over Ireland. Also in attendance were all YAP Staff, Members of The Board of YAP Ireland, Members of the Board of YAP Inc. and representatives from the HSE and many of our partners from other organizations. Following the Tour of Croke Park Museum there were presentations from Young People and Parents involved with the YAP Programme in Ireland over the years, as well as addresses by Dermot Walsh, the Chair or YAP Ireland, Pat Dunne, HSE Assistant National Director and Jeff Fleischer Chief Executive Officer of Youth Advocate Programs (YAP Inc.). A great day was had by all and we look forward to the next YAP Ireland event where we can all get together again to celebrate the great work being carried out by YAP.
